The Ideal Window for Newborn Photos
The question I'm frequently asked is, 'When is the optimal time for capturing those sleep newborn poses?'.
Firstly, consider whether this is your first, second, third, or fourth pregnancy. With the first baby on the way, your body is adjusting to the changes, and the baby bump may take some time to make a noticeable appearance. Recalling my experience during my first pregnancy, it wasn't until around 20 weeks that I started seeing a tiny bump. However, the real "pregnant" look didn't manifest until I reached 32 weeks. For first-time moms, I recommend scheduling your maternity photoshoot between 32 and 35 weeks to capture that perfectly round baby bump.
If it's your second or third pregnancy, your body tends to respond more quickly, and you might show earlier than the first time around. In such cases, I suggest booking your pregnancy shoot a bit earlier, around 29-31 weeks. At this stage, you're likely still comfortable and can easily handle picking up your toddler, which can add a lovely touch to the session.
Now, what if you're expecting twins? If you're doubly blessed, aim for the maternity shoot around the 6th month or between 25-29 weeks, depending on the size of your belly.
The final factor to consider is how you're feeling and whether you have a high-risk pregnancy. If there are concerns like bed rest or the risk of premature birth, it's advisable to schedule your pregnancy photoshoot earlier. A good time could be when you have a nice round belly around 27-30 weeks.
As for the question of when it's too late to book a maternity photography session, technically, it's never too late—unless you're in labor about to give birth (which has never happened to me, by the way, lol). However, the further along you are, the more uncomfortable and tired you might feel, making it challenging to hold poses and be in front of the camera for an extended period. If you're feeling great with no swelling, you can even schedule the session as late as 37 weeks. Always reach out to your photographer to discuss your specific circumstances.
